Why Is the Skin Under My Beard Dry and Itchy?
Share
Dry, itchy skin under your beard is usually caused by a lack of moisture, product buildup, harsh cleansing, or dead skin trapped beneath the beard. As your beard grows, the skin underneath can become harder to properly clean and moisturize. Your beard hair can also pull natural oils away from the skin, leaving it feeling dry, tight, flaky, and irritated.
Using a quality beard oil regularly can help moisturize and condition both your beard and the skin underneath it. Apply beard oil directly to the skin beneath your beard, then work the remaining oil through the beard hair. Pair it with a gentle daily beard wash instead of harsh soaps or shampoos that can strip away natural oils. Regular washing, moisturizing, and brushing or combing can also help remove dead skin and distribute oils throughout your beard.
If the itching is severe, persistent, very red, painful, or accompanied by thick scaling or a rash, it may be more than ordinary beard dryness and is worth discussing with a dermatologist.
